Committee Meeting December 2015.

Accounts;

·       Branch: £2210.53

The transactions from the Christmas Party need inputting.  However, it is thought that the figure will not be much different from this and if less certainly not by much.

·       Charity: £1003.40

The £6295.24 raised at this Christmas’s Appeal needs adding to this as does the contents of the tins.  Therefore we should be sending a cheque for in excess of £7200 to Central Office in January.  We will be requesting cheques raised to split the monies as follows: 60% - The RMA, 20% - Commando Logs Welfare Fund, 10% - BLESMA, 10% - Royal Naval Benevolent Trust

Welfare Report:

·       It is my sad duty to inform you of the tragic death of Mne Michael Younghusband on the 10th December who served in the QM’s Department at Cdo Logs.  The funeral will be held at All Saints Church, Church Street, Wellington, Shropshire, TF1 3HA at 1130hrs on Wednesday 30 December 2015, followed by a private family Cremation at Telford Crematorium, Woodhouse Lane, Redhill, Telford, TF2 9NJ which will also include selected military representatives.   As we are associated with the Regiment it is right and proper that the branch standard should attend.  John Peel will be traveling up and representing the branch.

·       Bruce and JP are managing the Welfare list.  If there is anyone who feels they should be mentioned or know of someone who should be mentioned please get in touch with John Peel or Bruce White.

·       A call for help initially for accommodation came from Central Office mid December regarding a former RM, his wife and 5 young daughters who needed immediate support.  We found an option to house them on a temporary basis but fortunately Taunton Branch had acted swiftly and that box was ticked.  However, North Devon did help out with Christmas Gifts for the children.  My apologies for not going public with this but as we were in the throws of fund raising at the time, time was limited so a small group of us acted on behalf of the branch. The result is that they will hopefully have a great Christmas, something which might not have been possible.

Branch Christmas Dinner:

I can report that 54 members and their guests attended the Christmas Party in the Officers Mess.  There was a change to the evening with the meal being carvery instead of table service.  This proved a great success.  The Sodexo Chefs did us proud and there was plenty to go round.  We even had two elves (Shearsby senior and son Iain) who assisted those who needed help even though some portions would feed a growing Bootneck.  All in all a great evening with an excellent raffle with 25 quality prizes(thank you Fran and Jacky), gift chocs for the ladies and chocolate Santa’s for the men (thank you Fran) and some entertainment in the bar.  The Corps RSM and family who attended in an unofficial capacity thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Legion d’Honneur

The chairman continues to wait for confirmation that all those entitled to receive this honour have done so before setting up a formal presentation at RMB Chivenor (hopefully).

Branch Meeting

We will not be having a meeting in December, as it is party season with the branch party on the 18th.  Next branch meeting will be January 8th.

·       Venue – SNCO’s Mess

·       Pay as You Dine: 1800-1900

·       Business: 1900-2000

·       Social Function A talk on the Traditions of the Burns Night.

Branch WAGs Outing:

·       Even though ladies from the Military Wives Choir were unable to attend due to a secret date to record their Christmas release in London the evening went off very well.  Watch this space for future events.  My thanks to Sue Shearsby for organising it.

Landing Craft Standard Presentation

·       The standard has now been framed by Brian Mulholland and is awaiting a formal presentation to 1AGRM RM Tamar.

·       A nice spin off dit - Due to the standard being framed the pole was not required.  As some of you may know Central Office are encouraging groups with the same interests such as PTI’s, Landing Craft etc to form “Virtual Branches”  One such branch which formed in August/September was the RMA Bikers Branch.  They should have had their standard dedicated at the Reunion but when ordering it the forgot to ordera pole.  North Devon – in the name of Colin Shearsby has now provided them with a pole for their standard – (The Landing Craft standards pole).

Mountbatten Festival of Music:

·       This is being held on the 7th, 8th and 9th April 2016 at the Royal Albert Hall, London.  Advance bookings are now closed.  However tickets will are on general release to the public.

RMA Website:

·       I hope everyone has managed to register on the new RMA Website.  This is now live.  All branch members who have emails should have been invited to register on site. You can either follow the instructions sent or log in to www.royalmarinesassociation.org.uk and follow those instructions.  If you have a problem contact [email protected]. stating your full name and membership number.

RHS Rosemoor Survivalist Weekend: 19/20th March 2016

·       We have been invited to attend again.  I propose a stall in the Marquee and field displays in the woods as we had last year.  More detail to follow.

Fund Raising:

·       My thanks to all those people who helped out with this years collecting.  We had around 12-15 who braved the weather across North Devon.   A special thanks to the CO,  Lt Col Bob Baxendale for the support that was provided by Commando Logistic Regiment.  In total we had around 30 ranks who kindly rattled a bucket and interacted with the public.  They were very well received.  It is undoubted that without uniform support we would not achieve the sort of total we did.  Uniforms work!.  The final total to be confirmed when banked was over £6200.

Wheelie Bins

·       The uptake for wheelie bins is slow.  We have around 20 in the container on the airfield. At £5 they are a steal.  We have had permission from the Council to be able to raise funds for RM Charities.  I am exploring other options to distribute the bins.  So if you want one please get in touch.

Landing Craft Standard Presentation

·       Update.  The material part of the standard is currently being framed and a presentation to 1Assault Group RM. Based in Plymouth will be made – probably in the New Year.  The standard pole was not required but has found a home with the newly formed RM A Bikers Branch for their standard.

Warrant Officers and SNCO’s Christmas Ball: 12th December

By kind permission of the RSM and Mess members there is been the provision of a table of 10 for their Mess Christmas Ball.  This is on a 1st come 1st served basis.  Cost of the ticket is £40 and cut off date is 4th December.  If you would like to attend the notices are in Reception.

Branch Attendance at Joiners and Leavers

I’ve been seeking clarity on the protocol for this monthly Mess event.  It was originally open to only Life and Honorary Members.  However in the last few years the RMA have been made very welcome.  We have to remember, however that this is the one night of the month when the Mess let their hair down and rib those leaving the Mess.  The dits (stories) are sometime very close to the knuckle and the language can be barrack room military.  Although the RMA are welcome only RMA members can attend and we have to accept that what goes on stays in the Mess. It is their night and we are only guests. It was suggested by John Gingell that an ID card for Life and Honorary Members would be useful.  The Chairman would look into this.

In short if you are easily offended (even though not directed at you) then please  don’t attend.

Branch Christmas Dinner:18th December 1830 for 1930 sit down.

·       So far the uptake is 36.  Please make it a priority to complete your form and get it back to Fran asap.  Remember there is a cut off to book of the 8th December.  Accommodation available in the SNCO’s Mess (make your own booking).

o   Articles, Bye Laws, 2015 AGM Agenda and Proposals which delegates will vote on, The Future RMA -Agenda for Change 2014-2019, Convergence of RM Charities, 1 Man 1 Vote, Clarification of Procedures (publication of “Policies and Procedures Manual”, Subscriptions and Direct Debits,

·        It was agreed that the committee would receive all documents sent from Central Office and there would be bullet points published in the minutes.

·       So from the documents above members should be aware of the following:

o   We are required by the Charity Commission to have a set of Articles and Bye Laws, which are now in place.  The Articles are very much the Charity Commission wording where as the Bye Laws we can change from time to time subject to membership approval.

o   For the first time all branches will have a set of Policies and Procedures which hopefully will guide branches through some of the pitfalls of charity regulations as well as effective operations at branch level.

o   Convergence of the RMA and RMCTF is on going and will be potentially voted on in 2016 by all when the 1 man 1 vote comes in.

o    At the AGM the Branch Delegates will vote on the following proposals

§  Amendments to the Articles when the RMA becomes Incorporated

§  Amendments to the RMA Bye-Laws

§  To move from the current voting system of branch delegates to every full member getting a vote

§  Increase in subscriptions in line with inflation to £15 to 65yrs, £12 for 65yrs and over and abolishing the over 80yrs free except for those currently receiving this benefit.  The RMA are introducing a Direct Debit payment option.

Rededication of Former RM’s Unmarked Grave

·      Since 1918, the grave of an unknown Royal Marine, washed ashore on the north Cornish coast, lay in Padstow Cemetery.

·      In 2013, the MOD's Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre started to investigate the history behind this grave and discovered that it contained LCpl William Whitmore RM, a member of the ship's company of armed merchantman SS Anna Sofie, torpedoed off Trevose Head on 25 July 1918, whose body was washed ashore nearly 3 weeks later.

·       In conjunction with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Cpl Whitmore's descendants have chosen a personal inscription, engraved on a new headstone which will replace the "unknown" gravestone at a rededication ceremony in Padstow Cemetery on 11 August at 1400 hours. The Corps RSM WO1 (RSM) Phil Gilby RM will be attending the ceremony and it is hoped that as many RMA Standards and RMA members will also attend this possibly unique event. The RMA National Standard will also be paraded.  The Royal British Legion will be present, but it should primarily be for the RM Corps Family to honor one of its own who has lain unacknowledged for so long.

·       Our Standard will attend.

·        A few of our members will be going down to represent the branch.

·       Some serving Royal Marines based at CLR are also hoping to attend.

·      The future of the RMA.

·      There is a great deal of work being carried out at Central Office to bring the RMA today’s world and attract new, younger members.

·      New Branch Byelaws and Articles have been written, some as required by the Charity Commission.

·      There is a new Website being designed where you can join on line.

·      It is proposed to collect subscriptions by Direct Debts.  This, apparently, is a more efficient method and I believe save the Association money.

·      The Association Marketing consultants are working hard to enhance the RMA with new Branding Guidelines.

·      There is a discussion regarding the “Convergence (not combining) of the 4 Corps main charities – the RMA, RMCTF, C Group and Corps Museum.

Why is the RMA doing this?  Traditionally most military charities that plateau with membership tend to cease operating in time. Anyone wanting more information about this contact me in the coming weeks and I will try to help.  Rest assured from what I have seen these pieces of work will be good for the branch and nothing is being bulldozed through.

·      Forth-Coming Events of Importance.

·      The Chairman’s Personal Thoughts

o   The North Devon Branch is held in high esteem at Central Office for the work we do.  This was also emphasised by Deputy Commandant General Brigadier Spencer and Corps RSM Gilby at the recent DCG’s visit.  We still punch well above our weight and our relationship with Commando Logs enhances the reputation of the RMA within the serving members.

o   My Personal thanks:

v The Committee for the sterling work they do.

v Rafflettes: Fran Rivenberg and Jacky Peel who have done an outstanding job again this year.

v All members who have supported our branch nights, dinners and fund raising activities.
